How it works

Convert a date

  1. 1

    Gregorian to Hijri

Pick a date from the usual calendar: the Hijri date appears instantly.

  2. 2

    Hijri to Gregorian

Pick a Hijri day, month and year to find the Gregorian date.

  3. 3

    Check the month

A Hijri month has 29 or 30 days: the tool tells you if the 30th doesn't exist.

The Hijri calendar in brief

The Hijri calendar counts years from the Hijra, when the Prophet ﷺ left Makkah for Madinah in 622. Its twelve lunar months have 29 or 30 days, for a year of about 354 days. Thirty-three Hijri years make roughly thirty-two Gregorian years: the year 1448 AH began in 2026.

The twelve months

Muharram, Safar, Rabi' al-Awwal, Rabi' ath-Thani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada ath-Thaniyah, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul-Qi'dah and Dhul-Hijjah. Four are sacred: Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qi'dah and Dhul-Hijjah.

How accurate is it?

The converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, set by calculation and used officially in Saudi Arabia. Where the start of the month depends on sighting the crescent, the actual date may be one day off. For a past date (a birth certificate, a historical event), the conversion is accurate to the day in most cases.

And every day, right in your pocket

The QuranWay app shows the Hijri date and the Gregorian date every day, and its calendar counts the days until the year's upcoming events.
